If I have scared rats I take their igloo and put it next to me on the settee so that they can get used to me in their own time and come out when they've built up a bit of courage.
Other people have bought pouches to carry them around it or put them in their hoody so that they get used to your smell.

I also believe in forced socialisation in that I will pick them up and hold them even if they don't want to although I don't recommend chasing them around the cage with your hand. I find if you have a firm hold on the rat and your are decisive in picking them up they feel more at ease than if you held them softly.

Obviously this is just me and others have a different opinion so it's worth working out what works best for you and your rats.

There's a good article called Taming Your Rats which might be worth a read too.

Shove them inside a baggy jumper that you are wearing :D

Yeah, i have the same problem, except mine are two newly weaned young bucks. Not sure if its making taming harder as theyre really young/springy. I keep putting my hand in the cage for them to smell, but most of the time i put my hand in the cage and they run in to their tube! any time imanage to get one i put it back quite quickly so that to them hand doesnt equal never returning back to home cage. tried giving them treats from my hand..no luck, so put treat next to them as a reward for sniffing my hand!! I'm also at my wits end! Im hoping to introduce mine to my group of 3 bucks so i want to be able to get them out on my bed for introductions, but the way they are at the moment im frightened theyre gonna ping everywhere and im gonna end up losing them! Also i think its wise to be able to at least catch the ratties!!

Any experience in young uns especially would be appreciated! :)

Don't lose hope!!! Iv been reading up on taming and also I helped with my friends babies a year or so ago and I have three tiny babies that I'm taming now myself, im no expert AT all but I would think if they are very tiny and pingy then I also believe in forced socialization.

How about trying a pen? Like a playpen. You can grab one of your little ones and go and sit with it for a good half an hour, inside a big cardboard pen or something similar so that if it does "ping" then it can't go anywhere :) just sit quietly untill it calms and realises that hands aren't evil.

So far only getting them out for a little bit of time means that they panic while in your hands and then go back in their cage, so the next time they see hands they only remember the panic, but if they stay with you till they are calm they will realise that actually no harm came to them when in hands, and as they go back in the cage give them something extra tastey so hands equal tastey treats!

These are just ideas but its helping with my three, they would ping and wee and scurry anywhere but near me and after just two days of handling like I said they are sitting contently in my palm and standing and stretching to sniff and lick my nose :)

Hope this helps! Good luck with your gorgeous babies!
