One of the staff in my local one told me she couldn't get the guys in the adoption tank out because she's allergic to dumbos.

I have seen mixed sexes in the same tank. This was some time ago and my local seem to have improved now. I asked for the small silver fawn one in the 'males' tank and they were happy to sell her to me as a male! I admit that I bought her because I was worried about the future of her and her potential babies. Luckily for her and me she wasn't pregnant.

However, since then I have not seen the same problem of mixed sexes.

ETA: regarding misinformation I've been told that the rats were healthy when they acutally had mites - the kind that cause crusty ears (mange possibly). I wasn't buying them but challenging the staff over their health. Someone else as looking into buying some of them but were put off after I told them that they would need repeated trips to the vet to sort out the problem.

I had no problems with Ratara, and they had got her used to being handled. She was still in the back, as they had bucks on the shop floor. This was at Brentford at the end of January.

I believe 3 of our rats were actually sexed wrong. This was a good while ago when we knew next to nothing about rats and took the shops word as gospel.

1st - My girlfriends rat was wrongly sexed and the shop told her that 'he' would be fine alone, and so she was left on her own without cage mates for a few months, furthermore they sold her a hamster cage with the plastic top to go with the rat and said it would be more than adequate.

2nd - Around November last year she than brought another rat to to go with her and a Jenny cage, this was also sexed as a 'he' however luckily it turns out to be female.

3rd - January time my girlfriend brought me my first rat, a beautiful silver fawn, This poor rat was left on its own for 2 weeks and turned out to be a pretty nasty biter that would draw blood from me constantly and squeal the house down if you touched him, but after a week or so he calmed down.

There was actually confusion around if this was male or female by the staff, I asked for the manager to come and sex it which he did and sexed it wrongly as a female (we had planned to put our rats together), by this time we was actually after a female because we had found out from a rat show that my girlfriends other 2 were female. During the intros my Silver Fawn Violated my girlfriends rat  and so we had 2 rat baby's on the way (both were female and we kept them)!.

We have now researched into Rat care a hell of allot more especially since all these problems (partly our fault from not doing this from the start), we now have 4 rats each, the silver fawn was de-balled (I had pets at home pay for this) and now lives with 3x rescue females I have (he's still very much grumpy but happy :P).

I suppose for us it turned out good in the end and we are happy with the rat family we have got other people are not so lucky.

ive had amazing experiances in p@h.. the staff often walk around with a rat on their shoulder :D much to my delight because i get to squeeeeeze them:P the staff are knowledgeable, they always check if you have another rat, what cage etc... and when ive been in there to ask about things to do with rats they dont automatically advertise their own stock... a guy in there with rats has reccommended various places where i can get ratty things.. the rats are handled and socialised, they always have food/water/toys and somewhere to hide. i like going in there because the staff chat rat :) :P

When I got my boys from p@h (before I knew better) Skatz came home with us with a hernia. It doesn't bother him so we're not operating yet but as far as the store was concerned they were healthy.

p@H in dundee have a freddy cage that they keep rats in and i have to say lots of stuff to climb and chew. Knowledge of sexing im not so sure, didn't get round to asking them

p@h in perth have not much of an idea about types, they had a rex in the rescue section and i was chatting to the lad and the girl in training. She thought it maybe had a skin condition and he was like hmmm yeah. I then told them its a different kind of coat and is suppose to look that way. I also took the chance to say about male rats not having nipples cause they were having trouble sexing the females. Seems to think rats don't have very big bits.. eepp
