warning for the squeemish making up straights!

Post by twilight123 » Wed Mar 17, 2010 4:38 pm

well i've really been enjoying making my straights mix up and this week i was due to make a new one and needed just a few bits from jungle gold that i didn't have enough left of from last time, so i thought i'd order some new bits and bobs to change the mix a little and keep it interesting! (thanks to Jemma for her spreadsheet which makes it very easy for me!!)

So i ordered some river shrimp.....i expected them to be a bit like mealworms that didn't look like an actually animal but these are like mini fishy's with lovely big blue eyes :( i just avoided looking at them and mixed with a big spoon instead of the usual get your hands in there way!

I also ordered some of this parrot egg food that jemma reccomended on here and i knew it had insects in thats WHY i bought it but was still a suprise to find something that looked like a mini lobster in there.......

God i'm such a wuss!

Lol, you should see the mix of bugs i gave Lilly to try this weekend. The shrimps are fine, it's the crickets and whole fish that are disturbing. I can just about touch the fish to cut them up into rat sized chunks but am not keen on handling the crickets. I can't get natures grub to work to link you to a picture though.

Ooo, i'd love to feed things like this. What bugs and things can I order that are okay for rats?

In my mix I have gammarus shrimp and mealworms. Its a bit gross and I try not to touch it especially when I find whole fish in with the shrimps :sickrat:
My brother used to buy live crickets at one point for them and that was disgusting especially when the rats wanted to clean you afterwards.

eewww :sickrat: can all of these be fed to rats? And how often?

I only have a few rats so do these keep for quite some time in a sealed container?

Thank you

I just mixed all those together and add it to my dry mix in small amounts, they keep well in a sealed container, you can feed them as the odd treats but then you have to pick them up lol. I wouldn't feed them massively often as treats as there high in fat but if you add them to your mix in a smallish amount they'll do well on them.

Yep, though to be fair they don't get it all in one go, the chances are they'll only have a few bits of different things every day, it's a small proportion of my main mix, along with the other protieny bits it makes up about 10% (by weight) but i would say over half that's other bits and bobs

Have you tried soaking the fish Jemma? I know you cant do that for a dry mix, but it makes them look a tad more appetising!

They would still look at me lol, i might try it actually add a bit of variation in texture now and then, i've not really used soaking mixes since my old men passed away. It's too much fun making them dig for there food.

Ooh, the fish looking at you! 8) I only have mealworms in my mix just now but was thinking of getting some other animal foods to try. I thought about starting with adding the river shrimp.
They get fresh salmon and other fish now and again but they don't seem to be that mad for it except for one rat at the moment.

I've been considering buying the treat mix for terrapins

Has anyone tried the silkworm pupae?
