my only idea is remove the one ladder I can see?
Perhaps you could try scatter feeding?

only three of the girls use the yellow litter tray, and i don't like the idea of them picking up food which is in dirty bedding. i would not eat out of my toilet. but ladder now removed. thank you for your reply.

Looking good :D

Rats don't have the same feelings about food and waste. They'll likely be weeing on their food in the bowl anyway :)

But rats don't find it eew :) They use their urine for communicating, granted not as much as mice say, but they'll use it for a number of things. Scatter fed food is likely to have less wee and stuff touching it as it's over a larger areas.

Rats will even eat their poos too (for vitamins) and wee on each other (scent marking). Perfectly normal ratty behaviour 8)

It's not really a waste..
they need clean bowls and peeing on their food is to tell the pack of rats the food is safe to eat, it's what they would do in the wild :)

so would it be ok if i kept there base mix and cat food, pasta bake, etc in the food bowl. but scatter fed meal worms, sunflower seeds, well mainly treaty bits. i do have two rats who loss weight really easily, there weight goes up and down more times than a yo yo. it would be easier with there base mix in a bowl so i can see what they are eating. i normally have to take everyone else out the cage 2-3 times a week and give them some extra bits without everyone else stealing it off them. just to stop there weight getting too low.
