Metal Cage Bases? & questions about builing your own...

Post by herro » Tue Aug 09, 2011 8:07 pm

My ratties desperately need a new cage, & I want to build it rather than purchase one. They currently have a cage w/ a pull out plastic tray, which I really like for ease of cleaning, but they've totally demolished it by being naughty gnawers. :angryrat: I know I can get a sheet of stainless steel & form that into a base (something like this), but if I do, how does that material stand up against urine & the like? Does it discolor? (I know it's "stainless" but for some reason I recall a cage I had as a kid doing so...) Do y'all recommend steel bases? What do you do to make cleaning easier if using this type? I figure I'll have to set it up so that I can lift the whole cage off of the base then... ?

If you don't recommend steel bases, what works for you re: home-made cages?

& does anyone have recommendations on the bar spacing for adult rats? I am thinking anything suitable for a ferret should be okay for the rats...

Galvanised steel would be good for a base, you can often get local metal works to make the base for you for around £20-£40.
instead of getting a frame to fit over the base you could opt to make it more like a pull out tray, like an explorer or an abode.

I've been looking into building my own in the last few weeks but it looks near impossible to make one with a professional standard.

Whats your budget for costs? Have you looked into getting a custom cage built?

I have a stainless steel base in my Abode and it is fantastic, I love it !! I`ve had it ages and it still is shiny and new.....Definitely , stainless is best. It is impervious to everything and well worth the money. :D
